Greensboro Escapes with 8-7 win over Roanoke

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke College blew another late lead as Greensboro escaped Kiwanis Field with an 8-7 come-from-behind win Monday evening. The Maroons are now 9-18 while The Pride is 16-19 on the season.

It was all too familiar for Roanoke baseball this season, not only blowing a late lead to Greensboro for the second-straight meeting, but over the last three games including Bridgewater and Guilford.

Jani Kamphuis got the starting nod, but lasted only an inning and a third, allowing two runs and walked four batters. The offense tied the game in the bottom of the first, but he got into trouble again and was relieved by Greenway, who got the Maroons out of the jam to keep the score, 2-2.

Greensboro took the lead, 3-2 in the top of the third, but Roanoke grabbed its first lead of the game as they scored three runs to take a 5-3 lead.  Jay Laramore sent a two-run blast over left field in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead.

The win was not meant to be as Greensboro scored four runs in the ninth inning. A three-run home run followed by an inside-the-park homer sealed the win for the Pride.

Brad Greenway pitched 6.1 innings in relief while allowing only two runs. Matt Herron (0-1) took the loss for Roanoke.

Laramore went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer, two RBI and a run scored. Alan Moore finished 2-for-3 with two walks and a season-best three runs. Patrick Collins was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Noah Davidson had a single, an RBI and two runs scored.

Tuesday's game at Randolph-Macon was postponed to Thursday afternoon in Ashland, Va.  The men will travel to Bristol, Va. to take on Virginia Intermont in non-conference action. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
