ST. MARY'S CITY, MD --- Roanoke dropped a 14-9 decision to #15 St. Mary's (MD) in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon. The Maroons fell to 3-2 on the season while the Seahawks improved to 5-1.
St. Mary's, ranked 15th in the country in the latest USILA poll, are now 6-2 against Roanoke. The Seahawks overcame an 8-6 early second-half deficit by scoring eight of the final nine goals of the contest to earn their fifth win of the season.
Roanoke started the game with a 5-2 lead with 12:16 remaining in the half.
Gina Valles,
Carolyn Miller and
Brooks Laufman scored the first three goals of the half as the Maroons took control early.
Lauren Carrier scored three of the first four goals for the Seahawks as they closed to within one, 5-4 with 9:58 left in the half.
Paige Mason's free-position goal put the Maroons up two with 2:37 left, but Allie Zerhusen countered back with a free-position goal of her own at the end of the period to make the Maroon lead only one, 6-5 at the half.
Carrier scored three more goals in the second-half to lead the Seahawks to a 9-3 goals advantage in the late period and the win. Aubrey Mirkin scored the eventual game-winner with 25-minutes left in the game to put them up for good, 9-8. Valles produced the offense for Roanoke, scoring all three second-half goals. The Maroons went 24 minutes without a goal until the four-minute mark when Valles scored on her second free-position shot of the game to give the final result.
Roanoke was only 8-of-17 in draw controls and were 5-of-9 in free-position attempts. Valles led the Maroons with four goals and one assist while Laufman had two goals and an assist. Both Valles and Laufman were 2-for-3 in free-position shots.
Sunni Ray added a goal in the loss.
Carrier led St. Mary's with six goals and an assist as Aubrey Mirkin had two goals and two assists in the win. Caitlyn Nichols added two goals while Emily Norris chipped in a goal and an assist.
Colleen Simpson had 11 saves for St. Mary's.
Katlyn Scarlett finished with 12 saves along with four groundballs.
Meegan Rourke collected three groundballs and had two caused turnovers to lead the Maroons defensively.
The women will travel to Washington, D.C. to play at Catholic University in non-conference action this Sunday, March 15. The Maroons are 3-3 all-time against the Cardinals and haven't won since 2003. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
