Baseball stays alive in ODAC hunt, defeat Guilford

Box Score

Greensboro, N.C. --- The Roanoke College baseball team defeated Guilford, 4-3 at McBane Field on Tuesday evening.  The Maroons are now 11-17 overall and 6-8 in ODAC play this season.  The Quakers dropped to 15-17 and 5-9 in the ODAC.

The Maroons won their third-straight over the Quakers and are now 5-7 in the series.  The Maroons did what they've done all year, erase an early deficit but this time they secured a lead and gave them a much-needed ODAC win to gain ground for that sixth and final spot for the post-season tournament.

After dropping five of their last six games, the Maroons got a big lift from some underclassmen today to give them a big conference win heading into a crucial doubleheader with Lynchburg this weekend.

Guilford got on board in the top of the first with two runs off back-to-back doubles to give the Quakers an early, 2-0 lead.

Brad Greenway tied the contest in the top of the fifth with his first career home run to leftfield to tie the contest at 2-2.

Greenway gave the Maroons the lead in the following inning as he had a bases loaded, two-out base hit up the middle to score two to make the score, 4-2.  The four RBI was also a career-high for the sophomore first baseman and in one game surpassed his season RBI total.

After a Guilford tripe and a run scored to make it 4-3, Joseph Johannes relieved starter Barrett Henderson with two runners on and one out.  He retired the next two batters including a strikeout looking to end the Quakers' scoring threat.

Matt Vess went 2-for-4 with a run and two stolen bases, which gives him the single-season record of nine on the year.  He is also second in single-season walks with 16.

Graham Thacker had two hits and moved into sixth in single-season hits with 40 on the year.  He is also seventh in season RBI with 23.

Henderson (2-5) finished the game with eight strikeouts, scattered six hits and allowed one walk in a career-high 71/3 innings of work.  He has moved into third all-time in single-season strikeouts with 41 on the year.

Drew Wallace picked up his second save of the season with one strikeout in the ninth to preserve the win.  His three saves for his career moves him into second all-time in that category.

Noah Davidson set the single-season mark in walks with 22 on the season and is currently fourth in career walks (28) and runs scored (28).

The men will take on Southern Virginia on Thursday before hosting ODAC-leader Lynchburg on Saturday in doubleheader action celebrating Senior Day.  Roanoke will honor seniors Matt Eubank , Dan Fallen, Jake Furry, Brennan Thacker and Vess.  The Maroons are winless against the Hornets (0-12) and dropped a 5-4 decision last season.  It was the closest game in the series.  Game time is scheduled to begin at noon.
