Newport News, Va. --- The women's lacrosse team fell in overtime to Christopher Newport, 15-14 on Sunday afternoon. The Maroons drop to 6-7 on the season while the Captains improved to 8-5. The 29 goals scored are the most in the series and the first loss for the Maroons against the Captains (4-1).
Down 8-3 midway through the first half, Roanoke chipped away at the Captains lead as Meegan Rourke scoring two of the Maroons three goals to close within two, 8-6 with four minutes remaining in the half. CNU scored twice in the final minute to give them a 10-6 at the half.
Roanoke came out in the second half and scored six of the first seven goals of the half. Amanda Hutchins scored off an assist from Ella Wade to give the Maroons a 12-11 lead for the first time since it was 1-0 with eight minutes remaining.
With 5:57 left in regulation, Gina Valles scored off a free position shot to give them a 13-12 lead. CNU scored with just over two minutes remaining to force overtime.
Paige Mason scored to give the Maroons the lead heading into the second overtime as CNU scored in the second and third overtime in which the Captains won their eighth game of the season.
Valles led the Maroons with three goals, one assist and three caused turnovers. Amanda Hutchins scored three goals and Mason had two goals, one assist and won five draw controls. Rourke finished with two goals in defeat. Cristen Sanfillippo won seven draw controls and added a goal.
Katlyn Scarlett finished with nine saves for Roanoke. Rachel Giljam had 18 for CNU. Hutchins has moved into 17th all-time in career scoring (128). She is only four goals away from cracking the top-10 at Roanoke in that category.
The women will travel to Bridgewater on Wednesday, April 9 with game time scheduled for 4 p.m. The Maroons are 25-1-1 vs. the Eagles all-time including a 23-game win streak since 1987.
