Bridgewater, VA --- The Roanoke College baseball team lost both games (5-8, 7-8) in a doubleheader against Bridgewater College today. The Maroons fall to 10-17 overall and 5-8 in the ODAC. The Eagles improved to (15-11-1) overall and (7-5) in the conference. The Eagles continue to lead the series 13-1.
RC 5, BC 8
Roanoke started off with one run scored but Bridgewater answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Both teams remained scoreless for two innings. Down 2-8 heading into the sixth inning, the Maroons scored two off of three singles and an Eagles error. The men continued to battle back. They held the Eagles scoreless for the remainder of the game but came up short with only one more run scored in the top of the seventh.
Matt Vess hit (2-for-4) including one run scored. Catcher Jake Furry went 1-for-2 with including a RBI sacrifice fly. Graham Thacker and Chris Zachodzki also collected an RBI in the contest off of a sacrifice fly and a hit respectively.
Starting pitcher Drew Wallace (2-5) pitched five complete innings and struck out four batters. Wallace allowed no walks in the contest.
Multiple Eagles led the Bridgewater offense. Graves (2-for-4) and Rhodes (1-for2) each batted .500 with a combined three runs off of three hits. Lenox and Edwards brought in two runs off of a hit apiece. Shaffer led the Bridgewater bullpen and pitched all seven innings. He struck out seven batters in the game.
Senior Brennan Thacker moved into second place for all time hits with 129 surpassing Robby Hoopes (126). Thacker is also in first place for base on balls with 37.
RC 7, BC 8
Roanoke jumped ahead in the first three innings with a 5-0 lead. The Maroons remained on top until the bottom of the eighth inning. Down one in the top of the ninth, the men refused to give up. One run was scored off of two Maroon singles and a sacrifice bunt from Furry.
Five Maroons collected two hits in the game and four of the five tallied a RBI. First baseman John Terlesky had two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Patrick Collins went 2-for-4 in the contest, including two RBI, two runs scored and a home run. B. Thacker also batted .500 in the game to tally one RBI.
Chris Caputo (4-1) started for Roanoke and struck out four batters and walked none in six innings of work. Cody Kidd (2-5) was credited with the loss but struck out one batter in two innings of play.
Bridgewater's offense was led by Graves again in the second game. He went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Lenox and Elkins both went 2-for-4 including one run scored apiece. A tandem of Bridgewater pitchers pitched for a combined of eight strikeouts. Foltz pitched three innings and struck out five. Elkins earned the win in the final inning.
The Maroons will continue ODAC play as they travel to North Carolina on Tuesday, April 8, to face Guilford College for the second time this season. Game time is scheduled 4:00pm. The Maroons won the last outing 9-8 in the final innings. Guilford is (14-15) overall, and (4-7) in the ODAC. The Quakers lead the series 5-7.
