Baseball falls to Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. --- The Hornets Matt Davis tossed seven innings of shutout ball in a 12-1 loss to Shenandoah University on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Maroons dropped to 3-4 on the season while the Hornets improved to 7-3.
Davis (3-0) struck out 10 as he extended his scoreless streak to 16 innings by shutting the Maroons out for the first seven innings of Tuesday's contest. Barrett Henderson took the loss for Roanoke, but Cody Kidd stepped in to pitch three innings of shutout ball with two strikeouts.
Roanoke managed its only run of the ballgame in the ninth, walking two, another hit-by-pitch and then seeing Jacob Furry reach on an infield error with two outs. Pinch-hitter Jeff Kisiel scored the lone run as he was hit by a pitch and stole second to put him in scoring position.
Scott Van Dusseldorp was 3-for-5 with four runs batted in on a double, triple and a home run - he started the game with three hits in his first three at-bats before lining out to right and striking out in his last two appearances. Scott Lambert had a pair of RBI doubles and Christian Frey led off the game with a home run over the left field wall.
The three Shenandoah pitchers combined to toss a 1-hitter - Furry singled to left in the second for Roanoke's only hit on the afternoon. The Maroons are now 0-2 vs. the Hornets, falling 16-1 last season.
The Maroons are back in action tomorrow as they host Lake Erie at Kiwanis. The Maroons hold a 7-0 all-time advantage and it will be their first meeting since 2004. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
