Baseball splits doubleheader vs. Washington & Lee

Salem, VA – The Roanoke College baseball team split a doubleheader vs. Washington & Lee (7-10), (10-6) at Kiwanis Field this afternoon. The Maroons improved to 8-12 overall and 3-4 in the ODAC. The Generals improved to 15-5 overall and 7-3 in the ODAC. The Generals lead the all-time series (12-2).

The Roanoke College offense was led by Patrick Collins who went 2-for-4 including his first career homerun as a Maroon. Senior Brennan Thacker went 2-for-4 in the contest with two RBI. Noah Davidson hit his fifth double of the season to earn one RBI. 
 
Down by two runs in the bottom of the third inning, Jake Furry hit a three run homer over the left field wall to give the Maroons a 4-3 lead. Thacker later followed with a single to left field scoring two runs. The Generals answered back in the top of the fourth inning with three runs off of four hits to even the score 6-6. In the bottom of the inning, Collins homered to left to give the Maroons a one run edge. In the seventh, W &L scored three runs off of three hits to seal the win.
 
Drew Wallace threw six innings and struck out five and walked three batters in a no decision effort. Reliever Cody Kidd (0-3) was credited with the loss.
 
The Generals offense was led Jim Plantholt who hit 4-for-4 including three runs and one RBI.  Terrance McKelvey and John Ditore collected three RBI and one run apiece. McKelvey and William Lewis both hit a double in the contest. Brendan Clark earned the win for the Generals with one inning of play.

With a 5-3 lead for most of the game, the Generals scored one in the top of the eighth off of a Peyster homer to left field. In the top of the ninth, the Generals continued to respond with two runs scored off of two hits to take the lead. Down 6-5 in the bottom of the inning, the Maroons rallied with two singles from Alan Moore and Matt Vess.  Furry then doubled to move the runner and score one.  Tied at 6-6, Plantholt intentional walked to load the bases. Collins ended the game with a grand slam over the left-center wall to give the Maroons the win.
 
Senior Dan Fallen hit 4-for-4 including one run scored. Graham Thacker went 3-for-5 with one run and 2 RBI. B. Thacker also had a two run homer in the contest.
 
Starting pitcher Barrett Henderson struck out six batters in eight innings. Sophomore Chris Caputo (4-1) earned the win with two strikeouts and one walk in the final inning of the game.
 
The Generals were again led by McKelvey who hit 2-for-5 including a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored. Plantholt went 3-for-5 including one RBI and one run scored.  Lewis also went 2-for-3 in the contest. Davidson struck out seven batters and walked one in 5.1innings of play. The loss was given to relief pitcher Plantholt who allowed only one walk.
 
Roanoke College will continue conference play with a home game vs. Emory & Henry College at the Salem Avalanche Stadium on Tuesday, March 25, at 7:00pm. The Wasps are 5-16 overall and 0-7 in the USA South. The Maroons lead the series (8-4). The Maroons will also host Greensboro in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, March 26, at 7:00pm at the Salem Avalanche Stadium. The Pride are 18-9 overall and 4-1 in the USA South and lead the series 1-0.
