Maroons fall short in doubleheader vs. RMC

Salem, VA – The Roanoke College baseball team lost both games in the doubleheader vs. Randolph-Macon (11-4), (6-9) at Kiwanis Field this afternoon. The Maroons fell to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the ODAC. The Yellow-Jackets improved to 10-7 overall and 4-0 in the ODAC. The series is tied at 6-6.

RC 4, RMC 11
Senior centerfielder Matt Vess led the offense as he hit 2-for-4 including three RBI and a two run homerun. Brothers Brennan and Graham Thacker both had two hits to collect one run apiece. Junior Lance Firebaugh hit his second double of his career in the contest.

Starting pitcher Drew Wallace threw six innings, struck out four batters and allowed only two walks. Joseph Johannes relieved Wallace in the 7th and walked only two.

The Yellow Jackets offense was led by J.C. Conway who hit 2-for-4 including a three run homer. Michael Wallace also hit 2-for-4 including one RBI. Bruno Gomez hit a solo homer in the contest. Charlie Hartt pitched 5.1 innings to earn the win. Hartt struck out three batters and walked two in the game.

RC 9, RMC 10
Roanoke trailed 8-2 in the bottom of the eighth, but a two out rally brought in six runs to even the score at 8-8. Chris Zachodzki, Alan Moore, and Jake Furry each hit a home run in the bottom of the inning. Zachodzki went 4-for-5 including five RBI while Moore was 2-for-4 in the contest.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead 10-8 in the top of the ninth with a two run homer from Adam Carpenter. Senior third baseman Dan Fallen and Zachodzki each had a hit apiece to help the Maroons retaliate and score one run but fell short with one left on base.

In 6.1 innings of work junior pitcher Barrett Henderson struck out three batters. Henderson was relieved by sophomore Cody Kidd in the 7th inning. Despite being credited with the loss, Kidd struck out four batters and allowed only one walk in just 2.2 innings of play,

RMC was led by second baseman Greg Meleski who hit 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Leftfielder Michael Wallace hit 3-for-4 including two RBI and one run. In seven innings of work, Byron Mendenhall struck out seven, walked three and allowed only two runs. Dillon Sheads struck out two batters in the 9th to earn the win for the Yellow Jackets

Roanoke College will host Averett University in a non-conference doubleheader at the Salem Avalanche Stadium on Tuesday, March 18, at 1:00pm. The Cougars are 10-14 overall and 0-4 in the USA South. Averett leads the series (1-3). The Maroons will travel to Emory and Henry for a conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 19, at 2:00pm. The Wasps are (5-13) overall and (0-4) in the ODAC. Roanoke leads the series 7-4.
