Baseball Splits Doubleheader vs. EMU

The baseball team split their ODAC-opener vs. Eastern Mennonite at Kiwanis Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Maroons are now 6-5 on the season while the Royals now stand at 4-11 overall. Roanoke won the first game, 3-1 and dropped the twin bill in nine innings, 7-6.  Both teams are 1-1 in ODAC play.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Maroons scored in the first, third and fifth innings to seal their sixth win in their last seven games. The tri-captains, Jake Furry, Alan Moore and Brennan Thacker each had two hits apiece. Both Thacker and Moore drove in a run while Thacker scored a run of his own and collected two stolen bases.

Drew Wallace threw his second complete game of his career. He struck out eight batters while allowing one walk in his second win of the season.

In the twin bill, the Maroons pounded out five runs in the first two innings of play and seemed to be on its way to a sweep. With the score, 6-1 in the top of the sixth, EMU scored two runs and followed with three in the top of the seventh to tie the score and force extra innings. They would steal the game away from the Maroons, scoring the game-winner in the following frame to earn its fourth win.

Barrett Henderson pitched five innings in a no-decision allowing one run and struck out a season-high nine batters. Graham Thacker, Matt Vess and Mark Eubank each collected a hit in the loss. The Thacker brothers had two RBI's apiece and Eubank with one.

The Maroons are back in action on Wednesday as they host PSU-Harrisburg at the Salem Avalanche Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
