Women defeat Lynchburg, 74-68

The women's basketball team defeated Lynchburg, 74-68 at the Bast Center on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 7-7 overall and 5-4 in the ODAC. The Hornets dropped to 7-5; 4-3 in ODAC play. It was the eighth-straight win over the Hornets and have swept the season series the last four years.
Freshman Jordan Gholson was the star tonight, pouring in a career-best 28 points, 18 in the second half along with seven rebounds and three blocked shots. She was also 11-of-14 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free throw line to lead the Maroons.
Roanoke won the rebounding battle, 37-36 and outscored Lynchburg, 40-28 in the paint. They blistered the nets in the second half, shooting over 60-percent from the floor and 80% from the line (12-of-15).
The Maroons started the contest, 7-0 after made baskets by Gholson, Caitlyn Long and Marcy Conner with 15:30 in the first half. 
The Hornets responded with a 22-6 run over the next seven minutes to take a nine-point lead, 22-13 with 8:18 remaining in the half.
Roanoke then countered with a 17-0 run that gave them an eight-point advantage, 30-22 with 2:47 left in the half. Gholson and Jaleesa Osborne combined for 11 points during that span to regain the lead.
The Hornets opened the second half with a 16-6 run to give them a 44-39 lead after two made free throws by Brittany Dahn with 13:11 remaining.
Gholson took over as she went on a run of her own, scoring five-straight baskets to regain the lead for good, 58-50 with 6:49 left in the game.
The lead got as high as 11 after two free throws by Osborne to give them a 68-57 lead with two minutes remaining.
Lynchburg never quit as they hit back-to-back three pointers late to cut it to within four with just under seven seconds remaining. Two free throws by sophomore Lindsey Skaaf with two seconds left sealed the Maroons third-straight ODAC win.
The Hornets played tough, outscoring the Maroons, 16-7 in second chance points, 21-13 points off turnovers.  They got production from their bench as well, outscoring the Roanoke bench, 27-19.
Lynchburg was lead by Dahn with 22 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Kristina Darby had 12 points and five assists.
Long and Osborne had 11 points each to pace the Maroons. Long had four rebounds and three assists while Osborne finished with six rebounds and four assists. Torri Bridge tied a career-high with eight assists in addition to three steals on the afternoon. Junior Virginia Anne Hagood had seven rebounds, which tied a career-high.
The Maroons will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 22 as they host Emory & Henry. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. The women are 46-20 all-time vs. the Wasps, 5-2 in the last seven meetings since 2004.
