MAROONS BEAT VIRGINIA WESLEYAN FOR FIRST TIME

SALEM, VA--For the first time in team history, the Roanoke College baseball team defeated Virginia Wesleyan, winning the first game iof a double-header with the Marlins 3-1 on Saturday. The Marlins beat the Maroons 6-2 in the second game. Roanoke is now 7-20 overall and 6-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Roanoke 3, Virginia Wesleyan 1
Roanoke senior Jonathan Wills allowed just one run, that in the top of the seventh, to lead the Maroons to their first ever win over the Marlins. Wills allowed six hits in the win. He stranded 13 Virginia Wesleyan base-runners in the win. Roanoke had entered the game with an 0-9 all-time record against VWC.

The Maroons put together a three-run rally in the bottom of the second. Nate Unroe and Clint Zimmerman opened the inning off with back-to-back walks. After Kody Kidd moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt, the Maroons got their first run on a Daniel Gills single up the middle. With two outs and runners on second and third, the Maroons took advantage of two VWC fielding error. Jake Furry reached when a pop to short was dropped, allowing Zimmerman to score, and a error on a groundball to short brought in Gills for Roanoke's third run.

Virginia Wesleyan 6, Roanoke 2
The Marlins struck early in the second game, scoring twice in the top of the first. Brian Schweers led off with a bunt single, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Matt Hudgins double down the left field line. Hudgins then gave the Marlins a 2-0 lead, scoring on a Ricky Allred double off the wall in right.

After falling behind 6-0, the Maroons got runs in the sixth and seventh innings, getting RBIs from Alan Moore and Matt Wylie.
