SALEM, VA-Roanoke College junior Amanda Hutchins scored with 2:20 left in sudden-death overtime to give the Maroons a 7-6 upset women's lacrosse victory over visiting St. Mary's College. The Maroons, who beat the Sea Hawks for the first time since the 2000 season, improve to 5-2 on the season. The Sea Hawks, who entered the game ranked 18th in the nation, fall to 3-4 on the year.

After playing the first overtime period scoreless, the game moved into the sudden-death extra frame where Hutchins got the game-winning, unassisted goal.

Roanoke sophomore Kayla Moore scored the first two goals of the game, before St. Mary's leading scorer Lauren Carrier answered for the visitors with 10:31 left in the first half. The Maroons and Sea Hawks traded the next four goals and Roanoke took a 4-3 lead into halftime.

The Sea Hawks opened the scoring in the second half on a second Carrier goal and then took their first lead on a Nikki Yesalavage goal with 19:56 left in the game. It took 12 minutes for the Maroon to respond, but with 7:39 left Bianca Catta-Preta scored the second of her two goals, tying the game at five. Hutchins then got the first of her two scores to give the Maroons the lead with 4:22 to play.
With just 2:46 left in regulation, Carrier scored on free position shot and the game was tied at six. It would remain tied until the game-winning overtime score.

The Maroons got 16 saves from sophomore goalie Katlyn Scarlett, eight in the second half of play. She and St. Mary's goalie Melissa Puzak each made a save in overtime. Puzak finished with 11 saves.
Roanoke returns to action on Sunday in a home game against Denison, while the Sea Hawks host Southern Maine University on Monday.
