Box Score SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College baseball team improved to 12-11 overall and 4-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with a 13-7 win over Guilford College on Wednesday evening in Salem, VA. The Quakers fall to 17-11 overall and 5-6 in the ODAC.
The Quakers opened the scoring in the contest, scoring twice in the top of the third inning. Ricky Seabolt led off the inning with a single to centerfield and moved to second on a Jeff Arzonico sacrifice bunt. After a passed ball moved Seabolt to third, the junior came home on a Chad Boone single to left. Boone then gave the Quakers a 2-0 lead, scoring on a Joe John ground-rule double to left.
The Maroons quickly bounced back in the bottom of the inning, scoring four times. All four came on a Sean Sturgill one-out grandslam. With one out Justin Bradley walked,
Brennan Thacker was hit by a pitch and Nathan Unroe singled to shallow left, loaded the bases. Sturgill then hit his team-leading sixth homer of the season to give RC the 4-2 lead.
One inning later it was a second long-ball that gave the Maroons a 7-2 lead. With Clint Zimmerman (single) and Kirby Hamilton (hit-by-pitch) on base, Justin Bradley hit a three-run homer over the field in leftcenter. That was also his sixth of the season. The Maroons went on to get an additional run to extend the lead to six runs. With runners on first and second, Robby Hoopes hit a grounder to short, a Guilford fielding error allowed Hoopes to reach base and a throwing error allowed the base runners to move up two bases, including Nate Unroe who scored from second.
In the sixth, Thacker gave the Maroons a 9-2 lead after reaching on a error and taking advantage of two wild pitches. With two outs in the inning, Hoopes walked, Matt Vess singled, and Clint Zimmerman walked, setting up a bases-clearing double by senior Kirby Hamilton.
A fourth Guilford error led to another Maroon run, that in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Maroons a 13-2 lead. The Quakers got their third run of the game in the top of the eighth, that an unearned run off of reliever
Mark Eubank. The Quakers added four runs in the top of the ninth, two unearned, to cap off the scoring.
Travis Andrews got the win for the Maroons, going five innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three batters.
