MAROONS ADVANCE IN ODACS WITH 15-14 WIN AT LYNCHBURG

LYNCHBURG, VA--The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team trailed 7-4 at halftime but rallied to record a 15-14 overtime win at Lynchburg College on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament. The Maroons improve to 10-7 overall and will next play tournament number-one seed Washington & Lee at 12:30pm on Saturday in Lexington, VA.

Roanoke junior Chelsea Rankin opened the game's scoring with a goal less than two minutes into the contest. Not too long later Amanda Hutchins scored and the Maroons led 2-0. The Hornets quickly tied the score at two, but again the Maroons scored back-to-back goals, taking a 4-2 lead with 23 minutes left in the first half. The Hornets owned the rest of the period. Lynchburg five straight goals to close out the first half at the break led 7-4.

After the Hornets extended their lead to 8-4 just 1:15 into the second half of play, the Maroons began their comeback. Hutchins, Kayla Moore, and Kally Perkins scored three straight goals to bring the Maroons to within 8-7. The two teams then began trading goals and with 18:14 gone in the second half the Hornets took a 12-11 lead. Hutchins again had an answer for the Maroons, evening the score at 12 with about six minutes left. Just seconds later, off one of Roanoke's 21 draw controls, Chelsea Rankin scored on a free position shot to give the Maroons their first lead since midway through the first half.

With just 1:16 left on the clock, Lynchburg's Kelly Vornadore scored her fourth goal of the game, sending the contest into overtime. It was the Hornets that struck first in the extra period, scoring just 12 seconds in. The Maroons controlled play from there however. With 1:32 left in the game, Roanoke junior Rachel Hutchinson evened the score at 14 and with just 38 ticks of the clock remaining, Hutchins scored for the fourth time, giving the Maroons the lead. Roanoke again won the draw and was able to run out time.

Hutchins recorded a six-point day for the Maroons, adding two assists to her four goals. Rankin scored twice and added an assists and after getting shutout in the first meeting with Lynchburg, Perkins scored twice. Roanoke freshman keeper Katlyn Scarlett made six saves in both the first and second halves. Perkins, Rankin, and Bianca Catta-Preta each led all players with five draw controls.
