EMORY, VA--The Roanoke College baseball team scored three runs in the final two innings in an 8-7 come-from-behind victory at Emory & Henry College on Wednesday afternoon in Emory, VA. The Maroons improve to 10-9 overall and up their Old Dominion Athletic Conference record to 3-3. The Wasps fall to 4-12 overall and 2-5 in the ODAC.
With the Maroons trailing 7-5 heading into the top of the eight, sophomore Matt Vess led off the inning with a single to leftfield.
Shane Spikes set down a sacrifice bunt to move Vess to second. Justin Bradley followed with a single, scoring Vess, and bringing the Maroons to within 7-6.
Brennan Thacker followed with a grounder to the pitcher, but on the play the E&H pitcher threw wildly to second, allowing Bradley to come all the way around to score the tying run.
In the top of the ninth, another E&H error allowed the Maroons to get the game-winning run. With one out, Robby Hoopes reached on an infield hit. Hoopes moved all the way to third on the Wasps error, a throwing error on a Clint Zimmerman fielder's choice. The next batter, Vess, sent a flyball to leftfield, on the out getting Hoopes home to score the winning run.
The Maroons fell behind 4-1 after two innings and then 7-1 after four. The team battled back to within 7-5 thanks to a four-run fifth inning.
Hoopes and Thacker each finished with three hits for the Maroons, with Hoopes driving two runners. AJ Haynes recorded the win for the Maroons, going the final two innings, holding Emory & Henry scoreless while striking out four batters.
The Maroons are back in action on Saturday in a double-header with ODAC rival Randolph-Macon College. The first game begins at 12:00pm at Salem, VA's Kiwanis Field.
