MAROONS SNAP FIVE-GAME SLIDE, BEAT LYNCHBURG 79-43

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women's basketball team used solid defense and 24 points from junior Cindy McGraw to defeat visiting Lynchburg, 79-43, on Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Maroons improve to 10-10 and stay in sixth place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with a 7-9 record, while the Hornets fall to 7-13 (5-10 ODAC). Roanoke's 36-point win was its second highest of the season.

After missing their first seven shots of the first half, the Maroons came alive and made nine of their next 12 to build a 10-point lead midway through the period. Roanoke also forced 14 first-half turnovers and added 11 steals, and went into the break up 41-19. Roanoke dominated the glass, out-rebounding Lynchburg 29-13 and getting 39 shots to the Hornets' 24 during the period. Roanoke had 15 offensive rebounds in the first half of play. The Maroons also went 5-for-9 from behind the three-point arc. McGraw led all scorers with 14 points in the half, 12 of them coming off of three-pointers, while junior Brittany Johnson added 11.

Trailing 10-9 with 13:57 left in the first half, the Maroons got one of their three-point buckets, a shot from McGraw to give Roanoke the 12-10 lead. That was a lead RC would not give up. Roanoke finished the first half on a 32-9 run.

Roanoke then breezed through the second half, building a lead as high as 41 points and forcing another 10 Lynchburg turnovers. The Maroons got support from their bench, as 13 different players finished the day with at least one point. Roanoke finished the afternoon outshooting Lynchburg 41% to 34%; 24 of the Maroons' points came off of three-pointers. The Hornets went 0-for-11 from three-point range. The Maroons also finished the day with 15 steals, 12 of which came from their five starters.

Johnson was Roanoke's second-leading scorer with 13 points, while freshman Maria Migliarese finished with 10 points and led the Maroons with eight rebounds. Lynchburg was led by junior Caroline Wesley and junior Megan Docherty, both of whom scored 11 points.

Roanoke looks to make it two in a row when they travel to Randolph-Macon Sunday afternoon for a 3:00 tip-off, while Lynchburg visits Washington and Lee on Sunday at 2:00.
