MAROONS CONTROL SECOND HALF, BEAT GUILFORD 84-73

Box Score GREENBORO, NC--Down 38-37 at halftime, the Roanoke College men's basketball team outscored Guilford 47-35 in the second half, taking away an 84-73 win in Greensboro, NC on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improve to 14-10 overall and 8-9 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with their second win at Guilford in as many tries. The Quakers, who had won two of their previous three contests, fall to 11-13 and 9-8 in the ODAC.

A tight game saw the lead change hands 18 times, including 10 times in the first half. Guilford took as much as a six-point lead in the first half, that on two Barry Wells free throws with 2:19 left, making the score 38-32. The Maroons scored the final five points of the half to cut the lead to one, 38-37. All five of Roanoke's points in the run came on free throws, two from Josh LaPorte and one each from Jared Butler and AJ Dowell. The Maroons made just nine field goals in the first half, making 34 percent of their shots, but outscored the Quakers 14-4 at the line.

The see-saw battle continued in the second half, with the teams trading the lead eight times. Roanoke built its largest lead of the early stages of the second half up to five, 67-62, on a Curtis Peery free throw with 7:35 left. The Quakers tied things up minutes later. After a Michael Diggs second chance layup gave the Maroons a two-point edge, Guilford's Caleb Kimbrough drained a three-pointer from the top of the key to give GC a 70-69 lead with 5:27. Ben Shrader, who scored a career-high 29 points at Guilford last season, answered with a three to give RC a 72-70 lead. Kimbrough then gave the Quakers their final lead of the game, that on a second three-pointer, the second with 4:52 left.

Those three points would be Guilford's final points of the game, however. The Maroons ended the game on a 12-0 run. Diggs got the run started with another second chance layup. Dowell scored on a driving layup to give the Maroons a three-point lead. Roanoke would then score six of their final eight points from the free throw line to ice the game.

LaPorte recorded his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and adding 12 rebounds. Curtis Peery also scored 15 for the Maroons and fell one rebound shy of recording the first double-double of his college career. The Maroon got to the free throw line 41 times, a season-high, making 26 of those attempts.

The Maroons close out their regular season with a home game against the Wasps of Emory & Henry College on Tuesday evening. The game, which will be Senior Day for the Maroons, will be a rematch of a 103-100 Emory & Henry victory just two weeks ago.
