SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team posted its first shutout since the 1994 season, beating Bridgewater College 11-0 on Monday afternoon and in the process securing the sixth and final spot in the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament. The Maroons improve to 5-10 overall on the season and end the regular season conference schedule with a 3-5 record. The last shutout for the Maroons came with a 21-0 win over Hollins in 1994. Bridgewater has its season come to an end with a 2-15 overall mark and a 1-7 ODAC mark.
Just shy of 10 minutes into Monday's contest, senior Meaghan Cromwell scored on a free position shot for the Maroons, getting the first goal and the game-winner. The Maroon defense allowed the Eagles to take just 11 shots on the day. On those 11 shots, senior goalie
Liz Manfredini was forced to make five saves, three in the first half, two in the second.
Cromwell finished the game with two goals and three assists, while
Mary Stewart Malone scored four times and added one assist.
Emily Hearn led the Maroons with six groundballs in the win and also added three goals. Cindi Hamblen and
Laura Bachmann also scored goals for the Maroons, who also got an assist from
Rachel Hutchinson. Junior defender
Coleen Harvey ended the day with four groundballs and a team-best two caused turnovers.
The Maroons are back in action on Wednesday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament. The Maroons will travel to Ashland, VA to play the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College. That game begins at 5:00pm.
