VESS AND HAMILTON'S LATE HEROICS LEFT RC TO 4-3 WIN

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College baseball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference double-header on Saturday with the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College, losing the first game 10-1 before rebounding for a 4-3 victory in the second contest. The Maroons are now 5-10 overall on the season and 2-3 in the ODAC. The Tigers move to 13-7 overall and 5-3 in league play.

After losing the first game by a final of 10-1, the Maroons appeared in jeopardy of suffering the sweep in the second game. The Maroons trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out, freshman Matt Vess tied the score with one swing of the bat, hitting his first career collegiate homerun. Two batters later, with two outs, Kirby Hamilton capped the comeback with a walk-off solo homer over the leftfield wall. The round-tripper was Hamilton's second of the season. Jonathan Wills got the victory for the Maroons, going all nine innings and allowing just three runs on nine hits. He also struck out three batters. Mike Eubank also had an RBI in the game, while Josh Ringstaff scored a run in the contest, scoring all the way from first on a Tigers throwing error in the fifth inning.

The first game of the double-header saw the Tigers build a 6-0 lead after just two innings, that thanks in large part to eight walks thrown by the Maroon pitching staff. For the contest, the Tigers scored their 10 runs on just five hits, while the Maroons were able to score just once on six hits. Eubank had Roanoke's lone RBI of the first game, driving in Lauck Blake with a bottom of the seventh inning double.

The Maroons are back in action on Wednesday in a road game against the Wasps of Emory & Henry College. The Maroons will return home on Monday, March 28th in a double-header against the Eagles of Bridgewater College. Those games will be played at Salem's Memorial Stadium.
