ROANOKE, VA--The Roanoke College women's basketball team had its most productive offensive night of the 2004-05 season in an 85-52 victory at Hollins University on Tuesday night in Roanoke, VA. The Maroons, whose previous high was 77 in the season-opening win, improve to 16-6 overall and 12-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Hollins falls to 7-13 overall and 3-12 in the ODAC.
In addition to their season-best 85 points, the Maroons also made a season-high 29 field goals and shot 51.8 percent from the floor in the win, also their best effort of the season. The Maroons also made 23 of their 26 free throw attempts, making a season-best 88.5 percent. The 23 free throws made were second only to the 28 the team made in a home win over Virginia Wesleyan College two weeks ago.
On an
Erin Hanson (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) three-pointer with 14:56 left in the first half the Maroons took a 13-3 lead. That three capped a run of seven consecutive points scored by the freshman. Hollins went on a 14-5 run to trim the Maroon lead to just one point, 18-17, with 9:08 left in the half. That would be as close as Hollins would get. Sparked by a Hanson jumper, a
Kayce Smith (Chattanooga, TN/The Baylor School), and two free throws from both
Brittany Johnson (West Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) and
Chandra Forrester (Wytheville, VA/Rural Retreat) the Maroons built themselves a nine-point lead, 26-16, just over two minutes later.
After Hollins had trimmed the lead back down to six points with four minutes left in the half, the Maroons scored 13 of the final 14 points of the opening 20 minutes and had given themselves a 16-point.
Kayce Smith got that run going with a basket, Forrester hit four consecutive free throws, Smith came back with a three-pointer, and Jennie Schafer (Centreville, VA/Centreville) converted a pass from
Lindsay Reynolds (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) just before the halftime buzzer to cap the first half scoring.
Hollins got no closer than 14 points in the second half, while Roanoke's lead got out to as many as 36 points. A 33-point lead came on an
Amy Reedy (Linville, VA/Broadway) three-pointer with 2:49 left in the game. Maroon freshman
Stephanie Morrisey (Abington, MA/Tabor) scored all four of her points in the final minute, the final two coming on a running jumper on the baseline.
Ashley Nesbit (Bowdoin, ME/Mt. Ararat) capped the Maroon scoring with a layup with about seven second to go. Freshman
Torri Bridge (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft) scored four points for the Maroons in the second half, the second two coming on a fastbreak layup she created with a steal in the defensive end.
The Maroons host Guilford College at 2:00pm on Saturday in the team's final home game of the 2004-05 season.
