SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College Maroons men's basketball team dropped its second game in as many days with a 71-61 loss to visiting Randolph-Macon on Sunday. Roanoke falls to 6-2 (1-2 ODAC), while RMC improves their record to 5-1 (3-0 ODAC).
The first half was back-and-forth until the Maroons went on a 7-0 run late in the half that included a three-pointer from AJ Dowell to go ahead 23-16; they maintained that lead and went into the break up 34-26.
An early jumper by Ben Lawler put Roanoke ahead 36-26 to start off the second half, but the Yellow Jackets then went on a 16-0 run that saw the Maroons go nearly eight minutes without scoring.
From there, Roanoke worked their way back, tying the game for the eighth time at 53 after a pair of made free throws by Jared Butler. But the Yellow Jackets went back ahead with a pair of three-pointers from Adam Krovic, including one at the 3:47 mark that gave RMC a lead they would not relinquish. The Maroons had several opportunities to cut into the lead late in the game, but could not convert on a number of chances from the field.
Roanoke's shooting proved to be their undoing, as the Maroons made just 34% of their shots in the game, including just 29% during the second half. Butler led Roanoke with thirteen points, while Curtis Peery added eleven off the bench. Ben Lawler chipped in with seven rebounds. For the Yellow Jackets, Justin Wansley had thirteen points and eleven rebounds. RMC shot 44% from the floor in their eleventh consecutive win over Roanoke.
The Maroons travel to Bridgewater on Wednesday for their final game of 2005, while the Yellow Jackets host Eastern Mennonite on Saturday.
