LEXINGTON, VA--The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team had its season come to a close with a 22-14 loss to Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, VA. The game was a semifinal game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship tournament. The Maroons close their season with a 9-6 overall record.
The Maroons fell behind 1-0 in the first five minutes, but goals from Rachel Hutchinson and Mary Stewart Malone put RC up 2-1. The Marlins responded with two goals to take a 3-2 lead, but Carrie Smith tied the score at three moments later. VWC again recaptured the lead, but a Malone goal with 12:46 to play in the first evened the score at four. Virginia Wesleyan then scored five of the final six goals of the half, including the last three, to take a 9-5 lead at the break.
The Marlins extended their goal run to six with the first three goals of the second half to take a 12-5 advantage. Roanoke, however, would not go away, netting four straight goals to close to within 12-9. Emily Hearn, Meaghan Cromwell, Julie VanDerGhinst, and Cindy Hamblen got the Maroons back into the contest. Like they did in the first half, however, the Marlins matched the run, scoring four of their own in a row to push the lead back out to seven. The teams traded tallies over the final 13:10, with Roanoke's final score coming with 4:10 to play, a goal from Hearn.
The Maroons were outshot 44-22 in the contest, including 27-10 in the first half alone. Roanoke keeper Danielle Serratore kept the Maroons in the game, making 16 saves in the game, including 13 in the first half.
Chelsea Rankin, Dara Lundregan, Malone, Cromwell, and Hearn all had two goals apiece for the Maroons. Cromwell and Malone also added assist. The Maroons were burned by two Virginia Wesleyan players that had six goals apiece, one also adding six assists.
