SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College baseball team fell to 9-9 overall following a pair of losses to Lynchburg College on Sunday afternoon in Salem, VA. Lynchburg took the first game of the double-header 12-1 and then came back for a 14-4 win in the second game. The Maroons fall to 0-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Hornets, who improve to 4-0 all-time versus the Maroons, also improve to 13-2 this season and 2-0 in the ODAC.
The Hornets scored six times in the first two innings of the 12-1 victory, and heading into the bottom of the fourth inning held a 7-0 lead. The Maroons got their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from junior
Robby Hoopes (Roanoke, VA/Northside). Lynchburg tagged on two more runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to reach 12 runs.
Anthony Hernandez (Ipswich, MA/St. John's Prep) and
Brandon Coates (Gladys, VA/William Campbell) each had two hits for the Maroons.
The Maroons were behind 6-0 in the second game before getting two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Nathan Unroe (Iron City, VA/Alleghany) tripled in
Sean Sturgill (Vinton, VA/William Byrd) and would later score on a Lynchburg fielding error. Hernandez singled in Hoopes in the seventh and hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to also score Hoopes. The Hornets, however, scored runs in all but two innings in the 10-run victory. Hernandez and
Mike Eubank (Roanoke, VA/Northside) each had two hits in the loss.
The Maroons are back in action on Wednesday in a single game at ODAC rival Washington & Lee University. The Maroons and Generals will get under way at 3:00pm.
