MAROONS WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT, BEAT LYNCHBURG 11-7

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team defeated Lynchburg College 11-7 on Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA for its fifth consecutive win and sixth overall. The Maroons are now 6-3 overall on the season and 5-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Maroons have now beaten the Hornets in each of the past two meetings. Lynchburg falls to 4-6 on the year and 2-2 in league play.

Roanoke junior Emily Hearn (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) started the scoring in the game, getting the first of her five goals just 20 seconds into the contest. The Maroons were awarded the ball to start the game due to a pre-game violation by the Hornets. After getting the ball in the offensive zone, Hearn finished a pass from Meaghan Cromwell (Alexandria, VA/Mt. Vernon) to give RC the 1-0 lead. After Roanoke hit the post on its next two shots, the Hornets took the lead with back-to-back goals. Kim Hamblen and Kelly Vornadore scored three minutes apart to give LC the lead. Cromwell figured in Roanoke's tying goal 40 seconds after LC had taken the lead, assisting on a goal by Rachel Hutchinson (Pasadena, MD/Cheapeake). Shannon Smith gave Lynchburg another brief lead, but back-to-back scores from Hearn put the Maroons ahead for good.

After leading 5-4 at the half, the Maroons scored the first two goals of the second to give themselves a bit of a cushion. Cromwell earned her third assist of the game, that on a Carrie Smith (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) score to start the second half. Hearn scored for the fourth time to give the Maroons a 7-4 lead, before the Hornets could get on the board with 20:16 left in the game. Smith responded with two Roanoke goals to push the lead out to 9-5. Carleigh Kessler scored Lynchburg's sixth goal, that with 8:41 to go, but Smith and Hearn again scored for the Maroons to make the score 11-6. The Hornets capped the game's scoring with 32 seconds left to play.

The Maroons held a 34-17 lead in the shots column and a 21-9 lead in groundballs in the contest. Danielle Serratorre (Conshohocken, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) made six saves for RC, while her LC counterpart stopped 12 shots. Smith and Hearn teamed to score nine of Roanoke's 11 goals in the contest. Chelsea Rankin (Columbus, OH/Thomas Worthington) also figured in the scoring column for Roanoke. Ann Lutz (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Davidson) came off the bench to lead the Maroons with four groundballs while Dara Lundregan (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) was one behind with three.

The Maroons are back in action on Thursday in a road game against nationally-ranked Mary Washington College.
