SALEM, VA--For the second day in a row, the Roanoke College women's lacrosse team picked up a victory thanks in large part to its defensive effort. The Maroons held Christopher Newport University to just two first half goals to run away with a 12-2 decision on Sunday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Maroons improve to 4-3 overall on the season with the Captains falling to 2-5.
The Maroons opened the game by scoring the first seven goals.
Carrie Smith (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) put the Maroons up 2-0 with the first two goals of the contest.
Emily Hearn (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk),
Chelsea Rankin (Columbus, OH/Thomas Worthington), and
Mary Stewart Malone (Fairfax Station, VA/St. Stephen's-St. Agnes) put the Maroons up 5-0 before
Dara Lundregan (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) scored the team's final two goals of the half.
On the other end of the field, the Maroons defense limited the Captains to few chances. When the Captains did get off a shot,
Danielle Serratore (Conshohocken, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) was up to the task, stopping the first three CNU shots on goal. She finished the game with seven saves. All of Christopher Newport's offensive production came in the final minute of the half, scoring twice, the first with 42 seconds left and the second with 21 ticks remaining.
After holding Randolph-Macon College to just one goal in the second half in a win on Saturday afternoon, the Maroon defense was given up just three goals over the past 90 minutes of game action. Roanoke defensive players, including
Katharine DiNinno (Hingham, MA/Hingham) and
Megan Hinners (Amherst, NH/Souhegan) helped create over 25 CNU turnovers in the contest.
All five of the goal in the second half came from Maroons, including one from
Meaghan Cromwell (Alexandria, VA/Mt. Vernon). Smith had a goal and an assist in the second half, while Lundregan added her third score and Malone her second.
The Maroons travel to Sweet Briar College on Wednesday to take on the Vixens in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest. The game in Sweet Briar, VA begins at 4:30pm.
