SALEM, VA--The eighth-ranked St. Mary's College women's lacrosse team scored the first five and the final five goals in a 13-8 over host Roanoke College on Monday afternoon in Salem, VA. The host Maroons fall to 1-3 on the season and lose for the fourth straight year to the Sea Hawks, while St. Mary's, which entered the game ranked eighth in Division III, improves to 6-1 overall.
The Maroons trailed 5-0 after the first 12 minutes of the game, but over the next 38 minutes battled back to tie the score at eight.
Carrie Smith (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) scored the third of her three consecutive goals to tie the game at eight with 10:05 to play in regulation. St. Mary's called a timeout immediately following the goal, and coming out of the break took back control of the game. Allyson Sarigianis scored the third of her three goals in the game to give the Sea Hawks a 9-8 lead. Carol Schmoeller and Kate Story capped off the Sea Hawk scoring in the final four minutes to make the final margin five goals.
St. Mary's opened the game with five consecutive goals. Sarigianis scored the first goal of the game, that with 24:33 left on the clock. Stacy Mann and Karli Libertini made the score 5-0, each with two goals. The Maroons finally broke onto the board with 16:33 left in the first on a
Julie VanDerGhinst (Boca Raton, FL/St. Edward's). That would be the first of four straight Maroon tallies.
Emily Hearn (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) and
Chelsea Rankin (Columbus, OH/Thomas Worthington) finished the scoring in the first half. St. Mary's owned the 5-3 intermission lead.
The two squads traded scores over the first 14 minutes of the second half before Smith took control to bring Roanoke even with three consecutive tallies.
Sarigianis and Mann each finished with three goals for St. Mary's, while Kate Story scored once and added four assists. Schmoeller scored two goals and added three assists for the Sea Hawks, who got six saves from senior goalie Jen Chumley.
Smith ended the game with four goals for the Maroons. Hearn added a goal and an assist, as did Rankin. The Maroons, who got nine saves from
Danielle Serratore (Conshohocken, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh), are back in action on Tuesday in a road game against conference rival Hollins University.
