MAROONS OPEN SEASON WITH 23-POINT VICTORY

ASHLAND, VA--The Roanoke College women's basketball team opened up its 2004-05 season with a 77-54 win over Shenandoah University on Friday evening in the Randolph-Macon College Tip-Off tournament in Ashland, VA. The Maroons will play North Carolina Wesleyan College at 2:00pm on Saturday afternoon.

Despite scoring their most points in a game since the 2002-03 season, the Maroons took control of Friday's game with their defense. The Maroons held the Hornets to just 19 field goals and a .257 field goal shooting percentage in the victory. The Hornets made just 19 of their 74 shots including just nine of their 27 tries (33.3 percent) from three-point range. On the other end of the court, the Maroons jumped out to a 10-point lead at halftime thanks to making five first half threes and outscoring SU 9-0 at the free throw line.

The Maroons never trailed in the contest after junior guard Lindsay Reynolds (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) opened the game with one of her team-high three three-pointers. After hitting her second just moments later, Reynolds helped the Maroons grab a 10-point lead just seven minutes into the contest. A Brittany Johnson (West Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) free throw with 12:59 to play in the first gave RC a 10-point lead, 15-5. Only one time the rest of the way were the Hornets able to cut the lead to single-digits. Earlier in the half, the Hornets trimmed the Roanoke lead to four, 9-5, only to watch the Maroons go on a 21-0 run. Reynolds hit the third of her threes in the run and Johnson totaled six of those 21 points.

The Maroons maintained their double-digit lead for the entire second half, extending their advantage to as many as 26 points. After making just nine of 18 free throws in the first half, the Maroons did considerably better in the second, making 11 of 17.

Senior center Jennie Schafer (Centreville, VA/Centreville) was the only other Maroon, in a balanced attack, to reach double-digits in the scoring column. She scored 15 and also led the team with eight rebounds. In addition to the eight points from Johnson, the Maroons also got eight points from both senior Kayce Smith (Chattanooga, TN/The Baylor School) and freshman Erin Hanson (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg). Hanson also added three assists, four steals, and four rebounds, while Smith had five of the team's 19 assists. Starting guard Veronica Kelly (Westport, CT/Westport) dished out five assists, had four steals, and five rebounds. In all, the Maroons had 11 different players score at least one point.
