BOSTON, MA--Roanoke opened up its week with a game at Division I Harvard University, a game that almost turned into one of the bigger upsets in the nation this season. The Maroons played the Crimson tight, but eventually lost, 93-88. The meeting was the first between the two teams, while the loss gave head coach Page Moir an 0-4 all-time record against DI schools.
The Crimson scored the first four points of the ball game, all four coming from All-Ivy league selection Sam Winter. However, Pridgen scored the next four points and the game was tied at four. The hosts slowly opened up a nine-point lead, taking that on a Winter field goal with 11:04 to play in the first half. Nate Stewart helped the Maroons mount a comeback, hitting back-to-back three-pointer to trim the lead to just three, 24-21. The Maroons then committed three turnovers on their next four possessions, allowing Harvard to extend its lead to 12 points. That lead got as high as 15 (with 5:43 to play). The Maroons, however, closed out the half on a 17-5 run, spared by offensive rebounds by Joe Milton (Shawsville, VA/Shawsville) and Kevinn Hunter (Dale City, VA/Gar-Field) and at the break trailed 46-43.
Pridgen canned a three to open the second half to tie the score at 46. The Crimson regained the lead, but another three by Stewart, his fourth of the game, gave the Maroons their first lead, 53-51. After again falling behind, the Maroons again took the lead, this time on a Pridgen three. Trailing 61-58 with 14:09 to play, the Maroons tied the score at 61 on three free throws by freshman Jared Butler (Springfield, VA/West Springfield). The Maroons failed to score another point in the next three minutes, allowing the Crimson to jump out to a seven-point lead. That lead climbed to as many as 11, with 6:34 to play. The Maroon defense forced Harvard into five turnovers down the stretch, letting the visitors to with 88-83. A Josh Foster layup cut the lead to 92-88, but that came with 12 seconds to play.
