Remembering Myles Rainey – 2006-2026

Roanoke College is mourning the loss of sophomore football player Myles Rainey, from Thomasville, N.C., who passed away Monday, May 18.

At the request of the Rainey family, they would like to raise awareness for mental health by letting it be known that Myles' death came as a result of suicide. The Raineys believe that Myles should be defined by his life, not his death, and it is their hope that this tragedy will remind us that mental health challenges are common — and that there is an abundance of support for those who are struggling.

The College will host a candlelight vigil in memory of Myles in Antrim Chapel on Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m. Counselors will be available on site following the tribute.

If you believe a friend needs professional support —or if you are feeling overwhelmed and need help as you try to reckon with this loss — please know that many people care and are eager to help. The college offers the following resources for this purpose:

The Counseling Center is available to support our student and campus community. Please call 540-375-2286 for information or to schedule an appointment.

TimelyCare is also a no cost online medical and counseling resource provided by the College for students.

For employees, the college offers confidential, no cost, short-term counseling services through the Employee Assistance Program. To schedule an appointment, please call EAP at 540-989-6605.
