Roanoke ends Bridgewater's win streak to open ODAC play

SALEM, Va. - The Roanoke College baseball team walked off Bridgewater in game one and jumped on the Eagles early in game two to take a pair of victories to start conference play. 
 
Game 1 Information 
Roanoke 6, Bridgewater 5 
Records: Roanoke (9-2, 1-0), Bridgewater (12-1, 0-1) 
Location: Salem, Va. (Salem-Memorial Ballpark) 

Game 1 Notes and Notables 

  • RC scored the first two runs of the contest in the early innings. Bridgewater then used a pair of long balls in addition to runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. Roanoke however was able to load the bases and take advantage as freshman Hector Orozco doubled to drive in all three baserunners. His fellow freshman Michael Hetzel then drove Orozco in with a double to walk off the Eagles. 

  • Jorden Olivera joined Orozco and Hetzel on the game's RBI list, driving one in during the contest. 

  • Hetzel led the Maroons in hits with two. 

  • Riley Fitzgerald picked up his second win season after pitching 3.2 innings. 

  • Thomas Burgess made the start for RC and went 5.1 innings while allowing just two runs. 


Game 2 Information 
Roanoke 11, Bridgewater 5 
Records: Roanoke (10-2, 2-0), Bridgewater (12-2, 0-2) 

Game 2 Notes and Notables 

  • Both sides jumped on the starting pitchers early, putting up a combined 10 runs, but RC came out with the upper hand at 7-3. The Maroons tacked on insurance runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. While Bridgewater added a pair in the eighth, Clark Mileto came back out and shut down the Eagles in the ninth to secure the win. 

  • Donaho led in RBIs with three after recording a pair of hits. 

  • Tyler Galloway also had multiple RBIs after lacing a single to drive in the first two runs of the game. 

  • Murphy and Galloway joined Donaho in recording multiple hits in the game, both tallied two. 

  • Trevor Orth grabbed his first win of the year after pitching two relief innings in which he didn't allow a run and struck out four. 

  • Chase Triplett made his first collegiate appearance, facing three batters. He also got his first career strikeout in the outing. 

Up Next 
RC is lined up to host SUNY Cobleskill for two games in the midweek. One game will be played on Tuesday (Mar. 10) and one on Wednesday (Mar. 11). Both contests are slated for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
