No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan takes two from RC softball

The Facts:

The Short story: The Roanoke College softball team faced stiff competition Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader, dropping two games to the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III, Virginia Wesleyan University.

Marlin pitcher Hannah Hearl tossed a no-hitter in the opener, walking one Maroon.

How it happened (Game 1):

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth. The Marlins scored two each in the fourth and fifth frames and added five more in the seventh.  

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Molly Houchins drew the RC walk.
*Cara Bennett threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
*Hearl struck out seven in her seven innings, facing just one batter over the minimum.  

How it happened (Game 2):
*
The Marlins had a 5-0 lead before RC struck for two in the bottom of the fourth, both unearned runs.  

Inside the numbers (Game 2):

Charlotte Gale was 2-4 and Carsyn Michaels and Samantha Rice also had hits.
*Sarah Prosser was 4-4 for Virginia Wesleyan (22-0/6-0).

*The Maroons (9-11/2-4) host Randolph-Macon College Sunday in another ODAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
