Maroon softball splits doubleheader at Mary Washington

The Facts:
Scores: Mary Washington 4; Roanoke 3, Roanoke 11, Mary Washington 7
Location: Fredericksburg, Va. – Battleground

The Short story: The Roanoke College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at the University of Mary Washington, dropping the first game 4-3 but winning the second game 11-7.

How it happened (Game 1):
*Roanoke opened a 3-0 in the seventh, but the Eagles rallied for four runs for the win.

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Riley Shupe went 2-4 with a stolen base.
*Charlotte Gale was 2-4 with a run and an RBI and Molly Houchins doubled and scored.
*Carsyn Michaels and Kiran Kapur each had a hit and a walk.
*Baylee Compton tossed six shutout innings before running into trouble in the seventh.

How it happened (Game 2):
*The Maroons fell behind 4-1 after two innings, but plated four runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to take an 8-5 lead. UMW cut the advantage to 8-7 with a three-run sixth but RC added two insurance runs in the seventh.
   
Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*
Heather McQueeney went 3-4 with a double, two stolen bases and two runs scored.  
*Four Maroons racked up two hits: Shupe, Gale, Haleigh Vaughan and Kapur.
*Michaels had a double, two RBI and a walk and Samantha Rice had a pinch-hit triple.
*Camryn Perkins tossed two innings of scoreless relief.
*Mauve Haun was 2-2 with three RBI and two walks for the Eagles (6-8).

*Roanoke (5-7) opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday at Eastern Mennonite University, starting at 1 p.m.
