Maroon softball opens 2026 season with DH at Greensboro

The Facts:
Scores: Greensboro 3, Roanoke 2; Greensboro 3, Roanoke 1
Location: Greensboro, N.C. – Barber Park

The Short story: The Roanoke College softball team opened the 2026 season Saturday at Greensboro College, but fell in both ends of a non-conference doubleheader.   

How it happened (Game 1):
*Ava Colontrelle doubled home Heather McQueeney in the first to give the Maroons an early 1-0 lead.
*After a Greensboro run in the second, RC took the lead again in the third. McQueeney singled, stole second and scored on a Carsyn Michaels double.
*The Pride scored twice in the sixth to go ahead and held on for the win.

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Baylee Compton threw 5 2/3 innings, striking out eight.
*McQueeney had two hits and scored twice.  

How it happened (Game 2):
*The Pride opened a 1-0 lead in the third but RC manufactured a run in the fourth to tie the game.
*Greensboro struck for two in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead.
*The Maroons threatened in the top of the seventh, putting two runners on with one out, but GC pitchers induced two groundouts to end the contest.  

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*
Claire Warden started in the circle and allowed two earned runs over four innings with three strikeouts. Grace Clary worked two scoreless innings in relief.
*McQueeney again had two hits, going 4-8 on the day.

Up Next:
*The Maroons are scheduled to host William Peace University Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. from the Moyer Complex.
