The Short story: Jackson Bell and
Marcus Morgan each scored 17 points Saturday as the Roanoke College men's basketball team defeated Virginia Wesleyan University 73-64 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest.
Roanoke handed the Marlins their first conference loss of the season.
How it happened:
*The Maroons led by as many as nine points in the first half but the Marlins cut the edge to 37-36 by intermission.
*RC led by just two with two minutes left in the contest. Layups by
Tyler Barnes and Bell and two free throws by
Patrick Clevenger extended the advantage to eight. The Roanoke defense put the game away by allowing just one point in the final 2:44.
Inside the numbers:
*Bell added a game-high nine rebounds and Morgan contributed five boards and three assists.
*
Caleb Franze had 14 points with three assists and Barnes was a perfect 5-5 from the field for 10 points and four rebounds.
*The Maroons earned the victory despite four players fouling out: Morgan, Clevenger,
Gavin O'Malley and
Porter Stanley.
*Malcolm Velmar posted 15 points for WVU (9-5/4-1).
