The Short story: Roanoke College celebrated its first season of varsity football Saturday since 1942 with a 23-7 victory over the Virginia University of Lynchburg (VUL) to open the 2025 season.
 
The Maroon defense held the Dragon ground game to -21 yards and RC outgained VUL 367-165. Coach Bryan Stinespring earned the first head coaching win of his legendary career. 
 
How it happened:
*The RC defense forced a three-and-out by the visiting Dragons on the first drive of the game, and Tandom Smith blocked the ensuing punt into the end zone where it was corralled by Brayden Andrews for a touchdown.
*Polo Hill broke a 16-yard run to find pay dirt and put the Maroons up 14-7 with 4:35 left in the first quarter.
*Kam Hill found Grey Deal for a 30-yard touchdown strike in the second quarter to make it a two-touchdown lead.
*The Maroon defense held VUL to -9 yards rushing in the first half to help build a 21-7 lead.
*Only two points were scored in the second half, an RC safety midway through the third quarter.
 
Inside the numbers:
*Tyson Miller gained over 100 yards overall, 85 on the ground on 18 carries and 49 receiving yards on three catches.
*Polo Hill rushed seven times for 69 yards and one touchdown and also had three catches for 22 yards.
*Kam Hill threw for one score and completed 13 passes, and picked up 22 yards rushing.
*Tandom Smith had nine tackles.
*Andrews and Parker Hardy each had four tackles.
*Terrel Ashley had eight catches for 83 yards for VUL.
