Roanoke unable to bounce back from deficit against CNU

SALEM, Va. - The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team were unable to overcome an early deficit as they fell to Christopher Newport in their final non-conference game of the regular season.

How It Happened 

  • After exchanging goals in the first half of the opening quarter, CNU went on a run to build take the lead and widen the advantage. 

  • Roanoke responded by outscoring CNU 5-2 in the second to close the gap to just three goals at the half. 

  • A lot less scoring happened in the third quarter compared to the first two periods, but RC had the advantage yet again. This time outscoring the Captains 2-1 to reduce the deficit to just two goals. 

  • The Maroons just couldn't turn the page though to regain the lead in the fourth, ultimately falling 15-11. 

Notes and Notables 

  • Zoe Blair led Roanoke offensively with five goals on five shots, including going 2-2 from the eight meter. 

  • Grace Koutouzis was right behind Blair with four points on a goal and three assists. 

  • Tracey Benzing and Maddie McDonald rounded out the multi-point talliers for the afternoon. Benzing had a pair of goals while McDonald recorded a goal and an assist. 

  • Lili Riley and Koutouzis topped the team in ground balls with three each. 

  • McDonald led the way on the draw with four pickups. 

  • Amber Stallings entered the game in the second quarter and made eight saves and allowed only six goals in her 45 minutes of work. 

  • Roanoke went a perfect 19-19 on the clear in the game. It was the second time this season that they achieved a perfect clear percentage. 

  • The sides tied in shots with 30 each but CNU ad the upper hand in ground balls, 23-16, and draw controls, 23-16. 

Up Next 
The Maroons have a week off before they travel to Virginia Wesleyan next Saturday (Apr. 12) for a 3:00 pm ODAC matchup.
