The Short story: Â The Roanoke College softball team upset the third ranked team in NCAA Division III, Christopher Newport University, 4-2 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday. CNU took the first game 11-0 in six innings.

Maggie McCray kept the Captains at bay for much of the second game, striking out eight and allowing just six hits, one walk and two earned runs to nab her 10
th win of the year.
How it happened (Game 1):
*The Captains scored single runs in the first and third innings and broke the game open with three runs in the fourth.
*After plating one more in the fifth, CNU pushed five insurance runs across in the top of the sixth. Â Â Â

Haleigh Vaughan each had two hits.

Madison Courts doubled and walked.
*Brooke Greaver went 3-4 with two doubles and a home run for CNU. Â
How it happened (Game 2):
*Courts belted a solo homerun in the second inning, but CNU countered with two in the top of the fourth.
*Taking advantage of a pair of CNU errors in the fifth, RC plated three runs.
Adriana Rivera brought home a run with a single to tie the game, and pinch hitter
Samantha Rice singled to make the game 3-2.
Madison Cooke hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2.
*CNU had two runners on with one out in the sixth, but McCray struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam, and sent the Captains down 1-2-3 in the seventh. Â Â Â
Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*The Maroons scored four runs off just three hits.
*Natalie Quinlan and Kendall Bentley each had two hits for CNU (30-4). Â
