The Short story: Despite four hits from senior catcher
Leah Butts Thursday, the Roanoke College softball team was defeated at Averett University 5-2 and 4-2 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader.
How it happened (Game 1):
*Averett jumped ahead early with two runs in the first inning and three in the second.
*Roanoke plated a run in the third when
Jocelyne Rinker singled in
Adriana Rivera.
*Butts opened the seventh with a double; Rivera brought the runner home later in the inning with a single.
Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Butts had two hits and Rinker had a hit and a walk.
*
Baylee Compton kept her team close with four scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits and a walk.
How it happened (Game 2):
*After Averett scored a run in the first after an error, the Maroons broke through in the top of the sixth.
Shaniya Lewis hit a one-out double and moved to third on a
Carsyn Michaels single. Butts and
Maggie McCray followed with RBI singles to put RC ahead 2-1.
*The Cougars countered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*Lewis and Butts each had two hits.
*McCray allowed two earned runs in the circle, allowing five hits and no walks with four strikeouts in a complete game.
*Carson Bradsher had two hits and scored twice for Averett (17-19/8-10).
