Maggie McCray sets another strikeout record as Maroons split DH at No. 12 RMC

The Facts:

The Short story: Roanoke College senior Maggie McCray set the new program single-season strikeout record Monday afternoon as the Roanoke College softball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader at No. 12 Randolph-Macon College.

McCray, who already broke the single-game strikeout record twice this season, fanned seven in game two for 142 strikeouts on the year and surpass Kelly Higbie's former top mark of 141 in 2012.

How it happened (Game 1):
*The Yellow Jackets scored single runs in each of the first three innings, the first two on sacrifice flies.
*The Maroons had back-to-back singles in the first but couldn't push a run across.

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Adriana Rivera, Kassidy Lancos and Madison Cooke all had hits for Roanoke.
*Lindsay Gedro went the distance in the circle for the Maroons, allowing just one earned run.
*Gracie Ellis threw a complete-game shutout for the Yellow Jackets, allowing three hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  

How it happened (Game 2):
*McCray got all the offense she needed on a Madison Courts three-run home run in the fourth inning.
*Rivera slapped RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings and Lancos brought in another run in the seventh on a groundout.
*McCray got out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth with a strikeout and forced three foul outs in the sixth. RMC loaded the bases again in the seventh but McCray closed out the game, allowing just one run.  

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*
McCray scattered five hits and four walks on the day to up her record to 8-5 - and also was 2-3 at the plate.
*Rivera had three hits in the second game.
*Randolph-Macon is now 28-6 overall and 13-3 in conference play.

Roanoke (15-15/6-8 ODAC) hosts the University of Lynchburg Wednesday in another ODAC doubleheader at 4 p.m.
