The Short story: The Roanoke College softball team opened its 2025 home season with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Mary Washington in non-conference play.

Maggie McCray broke the program's single-game record with 15 strikeouts in the nightcap.
How it happened (Game 1):
*After the Eagles scored the game's first run in the third,
Molly Epperson slapped a two-run single in the bottom of the frame.
*RC brought in two more in the fifth. After loading the bases,
Shaniya Lewis drew a walk and
Carsyn Michaels lofted a sacrifice fly.
*The Maroons plated five in the fifth for the walk-off, eight-run rule victory, capped by a Michaels three-run triple. Â
Inside the numbers (Game 1):

Lindsay Gedro tossed a complete game for her second win of the year. She allowed five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
*
Kassidy Lancos was 2-3 with three runs scored and was hit by a pitch.
*
Erin Gorschboth went 2-2 with a stolen base. She also made a diving catch in centerfield in the fourth inning to stop an Eagle threat.
*Michaels was 2-3 with four RBI.
*
Leah Butts had a hit and a walk and Epperson walked twice.
*Brigid Ward and Shelby Presgrave each had two hits for UMW.Â

How it happened (Game 2):
*UMW again got on the scoreboard first, plating a run in the first inning.
*Roanoke scored four runs in the fourth inning, but the Eagles turned a 7-2-3 double play or the damage could have been worse. Â
*Emily Angel got her team back in the game with a two-run home run in the sixth and cut the lead to 4-3.
*The Maroons added four insurance runs in the sixth.
Brooklyn Gunter slapped an RBI single,
Haleigh Vaughan brought home two with a double and Lancos had a bunt single to bring home another run.
Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*McCray recorded strikeouts on 15 of her 21 outs, scattered four hits and two walks.
*Lancos had a hit and two walks.

*The Maroons (4-4) return home Saturday at 1 p.m. with a non-conference doubleheader against Southern Virginia University. Â
