The Short story:Â Â The Roanoke College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at William Peace University, winning the first game 2-1 but falling 7-4 in eight innings in the nightcap.
How it happened (Game 1):
*The Maroons broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with a pair of runs.
Haleigh Vaughan led off with a walk and pinch runner
Aniyah Blake stole second.
Samantha Rice followed with an infield single and a stolen base, and
Leah Butts plated Blake with a single.
Erin Gorschboth brought home Rice with a sacrifice fly.
*Peace scored one in the sixth and had the bases loaded with one out, but starting pitcher
Maggie McCray got out of the jam.

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*McCray struck out 11 in a complete-game victory, allowing just four hits and one walk.
*Reagan Stewart had two hits for the Pacers. Â Â

How it happened (Game 2):
*William Peace took a 3-0 lead but RC tied the game with three runs in the fifth frame. After loading the bases,
Mikayla Gilmore brought one run in with a single and
Madison Cooke hit a two-run double.
*After a WPU solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, Cooke again tied the game with a two-out single.
*Stewart ended the game with a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth. Â Â
Inside the numbers (Game 2)
*Gilmore was 3-3 with a double and was also hit by a pitch.
*Cooke had two hits and three RBI.
