Roanoke/Ferrum split ODAC softball doubleheader

The Facts:
Scores: Ferrum 4, Roanoke 1; Roanoke 10, Ferrum 1 (5 inn.)
Location: Ferrum, Va. – VVK Field

The Short story:  The Roanoke College softball team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Monday, splitting a doubleheader at Ferrum College.

How it happened (Game 1):
*Ferrum plated single runs in each of the first four innings.
*Roanoke scored its run in the top of the third. Erin Gorschboth opened the frame with a double and came around after two groundouts.
*The Maroons had two runners on in the fifth, one in the sixth, and loaded the bases in the seventh but couldn't complete the comeback. 

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Emily Wood scattered nine hits with six strikeouts to earn the win in the circle for Ferrum (5-11/1-1).
*Kassidy Lancos and Adriana Rivera each had two hits and Madison Cooke had a hit and a walk.
*Baylee Compton struck out six in 3 1/3 innings of relief. 

How it happened (Game 2):
*Roanoke plated five runs in the third to break a scoreless tie. Gorschboth and Carsyn Michaels each doubled in the frame.
*RC pushed the lead to 8-0 with three runs in the fourth and tacked on two in the fifth.

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*
Maggie McCray allowed just one hit with 11 strikeouts over her four innings, walking five. Grace Clary retired all three batters she faced in the fifth to close out the game.
*Rivera finished 2-4 with three RBI and Lancos had two hits and scored twice.
*Cooke, Shaniya Lewis and Allie Bell hit doubles in the second contest.

Up Next:
*The Maroons (9-5/1-1) host top 20 foe Salisbury University Thursday in a non-conference twinbill starting at noon at the Moyer Complex.
