Big third quarter lifts women's basketball to ODAC victory

SALEM, Va. - The Roanoke College women's basketball team continued to get the job done in big moments as they grabbed a 63-57 ODAC victory from Ferrum on Wednesday night.

How It Happened 

  • Roanoke scored the first five points to start them on the upper hand and give them an advantage they wouldn't relinquish in the quarter. Ferrum drew the game close though, sending it to the second with Roanoke having 13-12 lead. 

  • The contest remained close in the second with Ferrum drawing even to make it 28-28 at the break. 

  •  Ferrum scored first in the third to take a one point lead but RC's three-point shooters had something to say about that. Peyton Kirchner and Ashley Fowler combined for five straight threes to help the Maroons widen the gap to 50-38 before the final period. 

  • Ferrum pressed the Maroons hard, reducing the deficit to just three. Roanoke went 11-15 from the free throw line though to help secure the victory.  
     

Notes and Notables 

  • Paige Breuer made it back in the double-digits column with a team high 18 points. 

  • Ashley Fowler was right behind her with 14 points, going 3-4 from beyond the arc in the third quarter. 

  • Peyton Kirchner had her third straight 10+ point game after joining Fowler in going 3-4 from the three-point line in the third. 

  • Mariah Cain also got in on the action, racking up 11 points and 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. She also had a team-high four steals. 

  • Abigail Rice took advantage of her opportunities from the charity stripe, going 7-9 to tally all of her points on the night. 

  • Nadia Snesarev was dishing it out in the contest, recording a team leading five assists. 

  • Kirchner also notably had four blocks on the night, a new single game career high for her.

The Maroons hit the road on Saturday, making the cross-state trip to Virginia Wesleyan for a 2:00 pm ODAC matchup.
