Roanoke Softball opens season with split in North Carolina

The Facts:
Scores: Roanoke 2, TCNJ 0; Greensboro 13, Roanoke 4 (9 inn.)
Location: Greensboro, N.C.; Barber Park

The Short story: The Roanoke College softball team opened the 2025 season Sunday with two games in Greensboro, defeating The College of New Jersey 2-0 in the first game before falling to Greensboro College 13-4 in nine innings in the second contest.

How it happened (Game 1):
*The Maroons broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the sixth. Madison Courts tripled to plate Ava Williams and Shaniya Lewis brought Courts home.

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Lindsay Gedro allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings to earn the win. Maggie McCray earned the save, recording all three outs in the seventh via strikeout.
*Elizabeth Gosse worked five scoreless innings for the Lions, striking out five.  

How it happened (Game 2):
*Greensboro led 3-0 entering the bottom of the seventh before the Maroons rallied. Lewis singled to bring home Courts and Allie Bell made it a 3-2 game with a bases-loaded walk. A groundout scored the tying run to force extra innings.
*A pair of triples fueled a 10-run ninth inning for the Pride.

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*Courts was 2-4 with a double.
*Madison Cooke had a hit and a walk.
*Ivy Ray and Anna Frazier each had three hits for Greensboro.

Up Next:
*Roanoke (1-1) travels to Maryville, Tenn. next weekend for two games against Maryville and two against Rhodes.
