Big fourth quarter powers women's basketball to victory

SALEM, Va. - The Roanoke College women's basketball team posted a 27 point fourth quarter to pick up an 80-60 victory over Geneva College in game one of the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic.

How It Happened 

  • The Maroons got out to an early lead in the first, going up by as much as 11 points. However, Geneva scored the last seven points of the quarter to make it just a four-point advantage for RC. 

  • It was much of the same in the second as the Golden Tornadoes continued to keep Roanoke within arm's reach. The sides went into the break all tied up at 33-33. 

  • RC kept pushing forward in the third, not backing down when Geneva took the lead, and came out of the third with a 53-52 lead. 

  • The Maroons flipped a switch halfway through the fourth quarter and went on a tear, scoring 16 unanswered points, to end the game at 80-60. 

Notes and Notables 

  • Roanoke hit 11-15 field goals and went 3-4 from three in the fourth quarter to help them outscore the Golden Tornadoes 27-8 in the period. 

  • Ashley Fowler shot .500 and added two free throws in the second half as she picked up her second double-double of the season. She finished the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds. 

  • Paige Breuer tied Fowler for the team lead in points at 17. She also notably hit 4-5 field goals in the fourth quarter. 

  • Breuer also set a career high in assists with seven on the night. 

  • Nadia Snesarev and Abigail Rice were the other two Maroons to crack double digits in the contest, tallying 13 and 12 respectively. 

  • Rice's point tally was a season high for the junior and was just two shy of her career high. 

  • Snesarev and Alicea Farmer each brought down six rebounds to back up Fowler's performance. Snesarev and Fowler also led the team in steals in with three each while Farmer added two.
