Roanoke holds strong to grab 79-76 victory over Principia

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Roanoke College women's basketball grabbed their first win in the month of December with a 79-76 victory over Principia on Tuesday.

How It Happened 

  • It was a fairly back and forth start to the game, but RC held Principia to just four points in the final five minutes of the quarter to take a 23-12 lead into the second. 

  • It was a similar story in the second period as Roanoke stretched their advantage to 44-24 before the half. 

  • Principia tried to challenge the Maroons in the third and were successful, but Roanoke kept pace offensively to produce their highest scoring quarter of the game. 

  • Prinicpia did most of the scoring in the fourth, but RC was able to hold on for a 79-76 victory. 

Notes and Notables 

  • Junior Alicea Farmer tied her career high of 18 points, going 6-11 in field goals and 4-4 from the charity stripe. 

  • Ashley Fowler was right behind her fellow junior with 17 points in the contest.

  • Paige Breuer rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points. 

  • Freshman Moriah Tate had a perfect shooting game, going 2-2 and finishing off two free throws. 

  • Farmer also topped the squad in rebounds with eight and in assists with five. 

  • Breuer and Fowler weren't far behind in rebounds with six and five respectively and in assists with three each. 

  • Roanoke went a perfect 12-12 in free throws in the first half and ended the game with their best single game free throw percentage of the season at .800. This is her second All-Tournament honor of the season in as many tournaments.
     
  • Fowler also picked up All-Tournament accolades after averaging a team high 17.5 PPG, pulling down eight rebounds, and dishing out six assists over the two games.

Up Next 
The Maroons have some time off for the holidays before getting right back into things to host the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic on Dec. 29 & 30. RC faces off with Geneva (Pa.) to open tournament play on the 29th at 5:00 pm.
