How It Happened

  • Despite the Battling Bishops striking first, Roanoke were the ones who jumped out to an early lead. They had a 16-11 advantage after the first.

  • It was a back and forth second quarter with NC Wesleyan getting the last say on two free throws. RC went into the half though with a six-point lead, 34-28.

  • NCWU came out strong after the break, ripping off 10 points to put themselves ahead of Roanoke. The sides tied it up three times in the final two and a half minutes before RC regained the lead on an Ingrid Moraes jumper to end the period at 47-45.

  • It was more of the same from both teams in the final quarter of play. The Maroons however took advantage of their time at the free throw line, going 14-16, to secure the victory.

Notes and Notables

  • For the second straight Saturday, junior Ashley Fowler put up a team leading 18 points.

  • Alicea Farmer posted her first double-double of the year, and the second of her career, with 10 points and a team high 10 rebounds.

  • Farmer also tied a career-high in steals with five in the game, four of which came in the fourth quarter.

  • Freshman Laila Staples hit double digit points for the second straight game. She tallied 10 in the contest as she went 2-3 from the field and 6-8 from the charity stripe.

  • Paige Breuer tallied all nine of her points in the fourth quarter. She did so by hitting the only three pointer on either side in the period and going 6-6 in free throws.

  • Staples and Mariah Cain backed up Farmer in the rebound game, bringing down eight and seven respectively.
