Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Pair of Maroons score in loss to Shenandoah

SALEM, Va. - The Roanoke College field hockey team put in a strong fight to keep #17 Shenandoah close but ultimately fell to the Hornets in ODAC play on Saturday.

Game Information
#17 Shenandoah 4, Roanoke, 2
Records: #17 Shenandoah (11-3, 4-1), Roanoke (4-9, 2-2)
Location: Salem, Va. (Donald J. Kerr Stadium)

How It Happened

  • Shenandoah struck first, scoring two goals in the first period.

  • The Maroons answered back in the second period when Corinne Orlando sent a ball into the middle from the top of the arc to Kaitlyn Robertson. Robertson then swept in past the keeper and into the bottom left corner to make it 2-1.

  • SU added another tally in the third quarter to move their advantage back to two.

  • Roanoke was not going down without a fight though. Against the run of play, RC was able to earn a penalty corner. After the ball shuffled around in the arc for a while, it fell to Savannah Bolte whose pass took a deflection and found Maddy Holmes. Holmes' shot then ricocheted off a Hornet stick, popping into the air, and into the back of the net to cut the deficit again.

  • Despite the Maroons' efforts to push for an equalizer, Shenandoah ended up on a breakaway and finished their fourth goal to bring the score to its final.

Notes and Notables

  • Robertson's goal is her third of the year. She has all her goals so far this season, assisted by Orlando.

  • Holmes' goal is her fifth of the season. She had now scored in three consecutive games.

  • Orlando tops the team in assists with four. She is currently tied for fifth in the ODAC in the category.

  • Robertson led RC in shots with five.

  • Holmes and Orlando accounted for Roanoke's other three shots with Holmes recording two and Orlando tallying one.

  • Goalie Chloe Miller made 10 saves, including six in the third period, during the contest.
