RC comes up short in double overtime thriller

FREDERICK, Md. - The Roanoke College field hockey team book ended the second half with goals to force overtime but came up short in the penalty shootout against Hood on Wednesday.

How It Happened 

  • Although Hood had the shot advantage, it was all even after the first 30 minutes of the contest. 

  • Roanoke struck first, just two minutes into the second half. Ellemijn van Wijk was in the middle and found Corinne Orlando on the back post who was able to finish it off to make it 1-0. 

  • Hood then scored the next two goals, one in the third and one in the fourth quarter. 

  • The Maroons kept pushing for the equalizer though. They were able to earn a penalty stroke with just under two minutes left in the game. Danielle Crabtree stepped up a buried it into the bottom left corner to force overtime. 

  • The sides remained knotted after two overtime periods, forcing a penalty shootout. RC however was taken down 3-0 in the shootout. 

Notes and Notables 

  • Orlando's goal was her third of the season. She also has now scored in back-to-back games. 

  • Crabtree's goal was the first of her career. 

  • Orlando led the squad in shots with five and was followed by Katherine Seal who had four.  

  • Freshman defender MaKenzie Branch made the first appearance of her career in the game. 

  • Freshman goalkeeper Chloe Miller racked up a career high 10 saves, all of which came in regulation.

Roanoke kicks off their ODAC slate this Saturday (Oct. 4) as they take on Bridgewater at Kerr Stadium in a 12:00 pm contest.
