SALEM, Va. - The Roanoke College track & field team is set to host their second indoor meet of the season this weekend with the Bast-Cregger Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 31 & Feb. 1).
The Bast-Cregger Invitational is named in honor of two of Roanoke College's iconic leaders. Homer Bast served the college in various capacities for almost 40 years. but was best known for his roles as a history professor, Director of Admissions and Registrar, and as Head Coach of Cross Country and Track & Field. In the spring of 1947, Coach Bast built the outdoor track with the help of college maintenance workers and student volunteers using donated cinders from the Norfolk & Western Railway. His cross country teams won eight Mason-Dixon Conference championships and in the late 1940's Roanoke was the best in Virginia, soundly beating all the large state universities. From 1954 to 1959, the men's cross country side went on to win six consecutive titles. In Track & Field, the Maroons won five consecutive indoor titles and six consecutive titles from 1954 to 1960. Morris Cregger, Class of 1964, was an outstanding basketball player and track athlete as a student. During his tenure as Chairman of the Board, Cregger spearheaded the campaign to raise funds for the athletic center named in his honor. The Cregger Center is now considered one of the top Division III facilities in the Southeast.
This weekend thirty institutions will compete in the Cregger Fieldhouse. Several regionally ranked Division II schools from the Carolinas will be in attendance as well as four Division III schools, including Roanoke's regionally ranked squads.
On Friday afternoon, multis kick off at 1:15 pm with field events starting at 3:30 and track events beginning at 5:30. On Saturday, the multis get underway at 10:10 am, running events start at 10:30, and field events at 11.
